The truth is, there are still a few important things to take care of once the wedding weekend ends. Some are time-sensitive, while others can typically wait until after the honeymoon or when your life settles back into a normal routine. A practical post-wedding checklist can help you feel organized without getting overwhelmed!

Organize Wedding Gifts and Deposit Checks
One of the first things to tackle after the wedding is sorting through gifts, cards, and checks. Before jumping into thank-you cards or post-wedding financial planning, it’s helpful to organize everything in one place so you know exactly what you’re working with.
Depositing any checks sooner rather than later is usually a good idea. Especially if you created a honeymoon fund and plan to use those gifts on your trip.
Some couples also use this time to discuss joint banking options, saving goals, or how they want to handle shared expenses. A simple spreadsheet that lists gifts, senders, and deposited checks will make the process much easier to manage!
Send Thank-You Cards
Once the gifts are fully organized, it’s time to get started on the next item on our post-wedding checklist: thank-you cards. And don’t worry — by tradition, you have one year post-wedding to complete your card. That said, the sooner, the better.

- And which cards have already been sent

Handle Name Changes and Legal Updates
If you’re planning a name change, this part of the process usually takes the most time. Start by updating your Social Security information (be sure to request a new card!). Then, move on to your driver’s license, passport, bank accounts, credit cards, insurance policies, and anything your employer may need.
It helps to create a running checklist rather than trying to handle everything at once. Some updates happen quickly and are relatively easy, while others may take several weeks. As the months go by, you’ll likely come across random things that need to be changed too. It’s a process, so be patient!
If you have any upcoming travel plans, be sure to double-check they’re booked under the correct name. Plane tickets for international flights in particular tend to be difficult to alter, so you may want to wait until after your trip to update certain forms of ID.
Preserve or Clean Wedding Attire
Caring for your wedding attire is another important task that often gets overlooked. Many couples get back from their honeymoon and realize their dress or suit is still hanging in a garment bag weeks later.
Cleaning and preservation are worth handling relatively quickly — especially if there are stains that could set over time. Wedding dresses typically call for professional preservation, while suits and tuxedos may simply need to be dry cleaned and properly stored. Be sure to ask your dress shop or alterations specialist if they offer preservation services! Accessories, shoes, veils, and jewelry should also be packed away carefully to prevent damage.
Organize Wedding Photos and Keepsakes
One of the most exciting moments post-wedding is getting the photos back from your photographer. As you go through the gallery, it helps to download and organize everything as soon as possible. A post-wedding checklist wouldn’t be complete without a reminder to back up digital files to multiple locations so important images don’t get lost accidentally.
You could also create:
- An updated page on your wedding website with all of your shared memories
- A shared photo album for family and friends
- Folders to make printing easier
- Organized storage for physical keepsakes like invitations, vows, or seating cards
You can expect to receive your photos within about six to eight weeks. Organizing your photos as soon as you can, with the big day still fresh in your mind, makes it much easier to revisit later rather than sorting through thousands of files several months down the line.
Decide What to Keep, Store, Donate, or Sell
After the wedding, you’ll likely find yourself surrounded by decor, signage, candles, table numbers, and any other extra supplies that were essential when planning your wedding but no longer needed afterward.
Some things are worth keeping — like anything personalized or with sentimental value — while others can be donated, resold, or passed along to friends planning their own events. Unlike some other items on our post-wedding checklist, tackling this gradually will feel more manageable than trying to sort through everything right away.
Remember that you don’t need to complete everything all at once. Organization matters much more than speed, and most couples work through these tasks gradually over the weeks following the wedding. It’s also very normal to feel a bit of a “comedown” after the big day.
